Reclaiming our roots: family, liberation and the work i am called to do
Estimated reading time 3 minutes | Song: Sticking to My Guns by PJ Morton
In a world where financial stability is often taken for granted, my family’s path toward sustainability is a journey of faith and unwavering commitment to liberation. As a decolonial healing guide, my work isn’t just about my individual journey- it’s deeply rooted in sustaining my family and uplifting my community.
Our family’s rhythm is intertwined with cultural practices, communal care and a deep commitment to collective liberation. My husband and I have designed our life to embody these values, even as we navigate unique challenges. My own journey as a disabled Veteran, combined with the demands of homeschooling, and caregiving have reinforced gow essential it is for us to create a financial ecosystem that sustains us and fuels the works we do.

Creating a Life of Liberation Through Education
Our choice to homeschool is one rooted in the desire to reclaim our children’s narratives, free from the often limiting structures of traditional education. My husband and I both were students of the public school systems, in different states and cities and the differences between the value of education and importance is a stark distinguishing factor. For us, homeschooling is about self-determination-it’s a way to empower our children to learn in a manner that honors their lineages and gives them tools to be agents of change. Not only that, as a homeschooling family, being able to give them live experiences to see how history is real allows them to not just learn about concepts but to make them tangible. Homeschooling also supports our desire for them to live liberated lives today and not just imagine them as something in the future. Teaching our children from a lens of liberation means exploring our ancestral stories, embracing the fullness of Black history, and learning with a holistic, decolonized perspective.
Navigating Financial Realities in the Face of Disability
View from the dock of some gig work, I was doing to help support my family.
My husband and I’s disabilities are a result of our military service and have brought challenges that impact every facet of our lives. This reality has only deepened my commitment to decolonial healing, focusing on Black health disparities and the intersectional lack of resources often faced by those in similar positions. For too many in our community, accessing support for mental and physical health remains a struggle due to systemic barriers. These barely even touch, the additional barriers of having been in the service and the extensive obstacles one must face just to prove their disability ties to their service. Through my work, I aim to shift this reality– not just for myself but for every person who has been marginalized in their pursuit of well-being.
A Community-Centered Approach to Sustainability
Truthfully, my family would not be where we are today without the love and support of some family and our community. My work thrives on community. From the cultural wellness retreats I am organizing to the workshops and healing sessions I offer, my purpose is to serve as a bridge between individuals and their ancestral heritage, helping them tap into powerful healing practices. I am consistently inspired by the community resources around us- and by resources, I mean the ways in which people in the community continue to show up for one another. Those that offer sanctuary, wisdom, and solidarity when resources feel sparse. I envision my role as both a guide and a participant, committed to redistributing what I gain back into the community to empower others.
Why Financial Sustainability is Essential to My Vision
To continue this journey, financial sustainability is crucial- not only for the immediate needs of my family but also to provide access to those who seek support. Every course, retreat and event serves a larger mission to bridge Black health disparities, elevate community-led healing, and empower individuals to reclaim their wholeness. In supporting my work, our community plays a part in ensuring that these resources reach those who need them most. My model isn’t transactional; it’s transformational, weaving together individual healing with collective liberation.
