Charm

Most of you reading this know I am a mom, so I catch my fair share of children marketed movies. I hope that does not come across as a complaint since there are times I really do enjoy them. But I cannot help but to see or notice the spiritual or messages behind some of them so that leads me to Encanto.

In short, I loved it (keep in mind this is my perspective as a non- Latinx identifying person with no attachment or understanding of the culture in Colombia). The colors, sounds the use of music, Spanish and let me not forget the representation of even Afro-Latinx folks. I was so excited about this movie, I text my girlfriends and told them to hurry up and watch it so we can discuss all of the things. Now, I will preface this with if you do not care to hear movie reviews that may come across a little awkward or dive deep into spiritual meanings and lessons we can all embody, skip this one. But if it intrigues you, keep reading.

My family and I watched this one on Christmas day 2021 and by 3-5 minutes in, I knew this one was going to be high on the radar for me like Moana. There were so many themes that appeared, from knowing your power and recognizing your truth within it, to honoring the matriarchs and ancestors while living in alignment with your calling/gifts.

Encanto is a beautiful story of family and witnessing the many gifts each family has within and how some may be uplifted while others are seen in a negative light but all of them being necessary. It also briefly shares the battles with having specific gifts and never being able to be seen as your whole self outside of what your gift allows you to be or do for others. This included strength, beauty and perfection. One bonus topic this movie hits on is the mother wound from a cultured perspective, again although I do not identify as Latinx, I know for sure from my culture just how strong of a presence our matriarchal figures are whether earth side or transitioned. Have you seen Encanto? Do you think you’d watch this one?
