Insights and Wisdom

“Ritual is not compatible with the rapid rhythm that industrialism has injected into life.” Ancestor Malidoma patrice Somé

Below, is my writing. I’ve named them Rituals in Writing because my writing has been one of the ways I use words to take up space and tell my own story. Writing is a ritual in practice for me and I make sure to create the right atmosphere for writing by lighting candles or incense and the right playlist. You may. notice some of these noted in my writing at the beginning.

Why Black Healing Needs to be different: creating spaces that truly support us

Healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. For Black communities, healing is a deeply personal and cultural journey shaped by generational trauma, systemic oppression, and the need for ancestral reconnection. Mainstream wellness spaces, often steeped in Eurocentric ideals, fail to address the unique experiences of Black people. This is why Black healing must be different—it demands spaces that honor our stories, celebrate our resilience, and embrace practices rooted in our heritage.

Centering Black Voices in Wellness

Traditional wellness industries often exclude Black voices, leaving us disconnected from spaces meant to support our healing. Inclusive healing spaces prioritize Black health disparities, decolonial yoga, and practices like ancestral healing that empower us to reclaim our narratives. From the Sea Islands’ Gullah Geechee traditions to the ancestral wisdom of Gabon, Black healing is about reconnecting to what has been systematically erased.

The Importance of Culturally Relevant Healing Practices

Incorporating culturally relevant practices like yoga for liberation, Ayurveda, and communal care can transform wellness spaces into sanctuaries that resonate with Black individuals. These approaches, when paired with an understanding of intergenerational trauma, foster healing that feels authentic and liberating.

Building Spaces for Us, By Us

It’s time to build spaces where we can be vulnerable without judgment, explore our ancestral practices, and heal through modalities that reflect our lived experiences. Black-led retreats, workshops, and programs—like my offerings at In the Stars Retreat Center—create opportunities for deep, transformative healing. These spaces celebrate Blackness while addressing our unique needs, like body positivity, safe community engagement, and holistic wellness.

Black healing is not a trend—it’s a movement toward reclaiming wellness on our terms. Together, we can build spaces that uplift, inspire, and support us in ways mainstream wellness cannot.
